want to spend $1200 on a computer

Post by PHoNyMiKe »

my buddy wants to drop $1200 on a computer (system only), he "already has the hard drives". he wants 8 gigs of ram, and quite possibly blu-ray burner. we're talking about an i7 920, but he was thinking AMD. he's afraid of overclocking but I think he 920 could run 3ghz with a nice little fan with no problem. I noticed some mobos have usb 3.0. he likes to make movies, like a producer, so video editing would be the main objective, at least dual monitor and a tv output at the same time, I figure 2 video cards for that, firewire, possibly encoding bootleg movies off the net as well. all around top of the line system. suggestions?

Your buddy may have to go AMD... I just read Intel won't support USB 3 until 2011:

<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

ASUS already have PCI-E 1x (or was it 4x) USB 3.0 cards so that isn't really an issue. The cards meet the specs so should work on all motherboards.

AOL, Intel normally would adopt it earlier, but normally it's a cost related move to do so. AMD is not adopting it any earlier IIRC.

If you buy an Intel mobo, the manufacturers are putting in 3rd party USB3 solutions in the meantime, so it's a non-issue really... it's that the costs are still handed down to you though. When it is officially adopted, the cost of USB3 will go down with it.... although Intel is trying to get something similar to USB3 created, so there's no rush for them to adopt.

He could also try the combo that comes with the Cooler Master Storm Scout on newegg.com

you remember it correctly. the steve dislikes the current blu-ray software situation.

if CFX/SLI isn't necessary, you'll get more bang for your buck with an 1156 i7. turbo modes would negate need for overclocking if you have a half-decent cooler, giving performance that makes you happy without making your buddy nervous.

even if he has drives, it may be worth it to replace one/add another (or consider a decent SSD, if budget allows) as the system drive; new drives are perceptibly faster.

you've seen my comments on PSUs before, get something 80+ Bronze or better and life will be good.

if he's going to drop that much he should get a SSD to run his OS on and use the other hard drives for storage

"Little" fans do not cool an i7.

that said, i have a TRUE CU with a single blow on fan, and run clocked at 3.37

I can't lower my i7 below 48c - 53c and I have a V8 installed. I hope it is not defective...

well, that's where mine sits with the stock heatsink/fan. CPU at 48 with the cores at 50 and 48 (2 pairs with diff temps, 2 degrees difference between the pairs at idle)

Well the cores are around 40c and the CPUTIN around 50c and the CPU fan is rotating at 1687 RPM according to CPUID Hardware Monitor Pro and according to the ASUS PC Probe II the CPU temperature is 51c. I wonder if I'm ok and BTW the thermal paste is MX-3.

somethings up there, the cputin should be cooler then the cores if you're cooling is working efficiently.

Do you think that's because I added too much thermal paste?

My bad, my processor is reported as 43 degrees while the cores are 48/50.

Where is CPUTIN seen in CPUID Hardware Monitor Pro?

Okay, now that I actually ran the program and see it doesn't match what there picture depicts, my CPUTIN is 41 while the cores are 47/49.

Not sure, don't have a device to monitor that in this room. At the moment I'd say about 25'ish maybe 28. Its midnight here, but also summer.

In my case the temperature outside is 25c and 78f and this is only on Winter-Spring time. i don't want to know what will happen in summer with a temp of 85-92F. What? CPUTIN is now 33.5c and cores are around 43c WTF?

Asus mainboard?

sometimes the cputin doesn't calibrate correctly on start and you will see the cputin higher then the cores. if that happens i usually just hibernate and resume.

Yes it is the ASUS P6T board (not deluxe). Right now CPUID Hardware Monitor shows the same result as the first time with the Tin hotter than the cores and ASUS Probe II shows 50c all the time. With the time I will have to replace the V8 with a Titan Fenrir who is supposed to be superior.

yeah, have you updated the bios at all since getting it? Asus has had 2 or 3 updates for the entire iX mainboard line in the last month or so.

I've had consistent results all the time, I make sure to be using the latest BIOS update that doesn't just add support for more CPU's that I don't have ._.

I updated the BIOS of the P6T and When I used PC Probe II the CPU at 50c and it gave me an alert of the casing fans stopping. I opened up the case and they where running so when I closed the case I opened HW Monitor Pro and the CPU TIN is at 51c and the cores are all around 43c... Then I opened PC Wizard 2010 and the results are the same as HW Monitor Pro. The temperature outside is 25c and 77f. I'm beginning to feel afraid.
