Age of Empires II Gold Edition Windows XP issues

Hello everyone,

I hhave recently come into a copy of AoE II . I installed the game on my laptop (running on Windows XP SP3).

I install the game and its expansion with no problems.

When I start the expansion, the text on the main menu is not displayed. If I select to create a custom game, the screen text is displayed but in the wron areas (instead of being in the middle of a button for example, the text is moved downward)

The original game works with no peoblem, these display problems only occur when playing the expansion

Tried that, 1.0c still exhibits the problems.

Update your laptop's video drivers perhaps?

Maybe try "Disabling Visual Themes"

google says possible font problems. double-check all required fonts are installed.

if any of the standard windows fonts are missing/corrupted, this can cause the issue.

Any idea which fonts could be missing/corrupted? Or how to tell?

AoEIII is a MS game released in '05 - there aren't going to be any Luna-related issues.

I have googled it and it seems a few people had the same problem, although no definite solution. They reported that reinstalling does not help. Only suggestion I found worth mentioning was installing the MS XML Service Pack

but I don't know anything about the game and if it will really help.

I also have this exact problem

Im wondering if an update caused the problem, I previously ran this game on this comp with no problem. I recently re-installed and I have the exact saem problem. AOE2 works fine, expansion doesnt....drop down menus blank and some text layers missing or misplaced.

opening some scenarios give me a screen but no accessible buttons, strange resolution what seems to be extremely low. huge blown up corner of screen. other scenarios just make the program crash.

compatibility program doesnt change anything. the only thing I changed is i run mcafee antivirus which i didnt before.
