Unable to save and want to redirect files

Post by the_shadow_traveler »

i am using the DOS version of ZSNES and I have my roms on a cd and when I save the game it works until I leave and go to open it back up. When I go to open it, it's not there. I think it is because they are on a cd so I want to some how Re-direcrect the save to a floppy disk or just to my computer. Can some one help me out ?

Thanks alot

Open Zsnes.cfg in Notepad, edit the line SaveDirectory = and point it to a directory in your HDD.

If there is no save directory specified, ZSNES *tries* to store the savestates and SRAM in the same folder as the rom images; in this case, on the CD.

DontSave = 0

; Savefile directory. Leave it blank if you want the save files to be in the
; same directory as the games. It should be in a format like : C:\dir\dir

SaveDirectory =

; Game directory. This is the directory where the GUI starts at.
; ZSNES automatically writes the current directory here upon exit.

GameDirectory = C:\Documents and Settings\Larka\Desktop\zsns1r36

Anything wrong here ?

Yes, you have not defined a directory where you want ZSNES to save.

Please read my initial post a couple of times.

Better, although you might want to edit the GameDirectory = so that it points to your rom images...although this isn't necessary.

Don't change that.

Make sure the directory isn't read-only.

Right-click on the folder and choose Preferences. Make sure that the Read-Only checkbox is not checked.

Apply to all files and subdirectories.

A folder containing your save folder is probably set to read-only. Start at the upper-most level and check all folders from the path.

C:\
C:\Documents and Settings\
C:\Documents and Settings\Larka\
C:\Documents and Settings\Larka\Desktop\
C:\Documents and Settings\Larka\Desktop\Saved Games\

I'm not sure, but I think you should put a backslash after the game path.

You might also want to make sure that there are no typos, and that the directory already exists. ZSNES will not create the folder that you specified, so it must already exist.

You have spaces in your path. Try surrounding it in quotes:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Larka\Desktop\Saved Games\"

A saner directory might help.
Make c:\zsnes and save there.

That's because the read-only flag on folders is primarily ignored by Windows (including Explorer and probably other Microsoft programs).

This article explains it well:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.as ... -us;326549

Whether a folder has read-only enabled or not should have no effect on whether the contents of the folder can be changed. In fact, programs can easily change the contents of read-only file as well if they are so programmed (it's simply bad practice).

Follow the recommendations about enclosing the path in quotes. If that fails, change the path to a shorter, 8.3 compatible format. That includes killing all spaces.
