New changes to Macs maybe usher in ZSNES on a new platform?

Post by Yoshmaista »

I'm curious, with the changes that they've done to macs (moved to a Unix-based OS, and now the move to Intel) do you guys foresee making ZSNES for the mac platform anytime soon? It's cool if you don't, I'm just curious.

Apple's switch to Intel processors won't happen for another year yet, so no it won't happen soon. And since when did they say they were going to use an x86-compatible processor, which is required by ZSNES?

If and when Apple does release a Mac with an x86-compatible processor (which is fairly unlikely) the ZSNES team probably would consider releasing a MacOS port, but anything is far from certain.

there is an x86 port of OS X. It's a developer release, but still, it works, and is released by Apple.

Are you talking about Darwin? If so, its missing stuff from OS X still isnt it?
That and the hardware it will run on is still limited at this point. (At least I think I read that somewhere.) I did try to install it on one of my machines, but I am unable to burn the ISO I downloaded from Apple.

We already have a port for x86 UNIX based OSs.

Yes.

I'm unsure if it'd work on an Apple though, Nach. What I'm asking is, if it didn't, then would you port it to said platform?

If it's x86 and unix compatible, then we have the port already.

If it's x86 but not unix compatible, we may port it, we may not. That would depend on it's popularity and if the devs use the OS or not.

Being that Mac OS X is unix compatible AFAIK, the only issue is if it's x86 or not.

If someone were to send me an x86 machine loaded with Mac OS X, or pehaps just Mac OS X itself on a Live CD or perhaps not even a Live CD, I'd let you know the situation.

I guess it depends on the ability of SDL to run on OS X x86.

Simple DirectMedia Layer supports Linux, Windows, BeOS, MacOS Classic, MacOS X, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, BSD/OS, Solaris, IRIX, and QNX. There is also code, but no official support, for Windows CE, AmigaOS, Dreamcast, Atari, NetBSD, AIX, OSF/Tru64, RISC OS, and SymbianOS.
SDL is written in C
