Trouble running ZSNES

Post by johnny101 »

Hey! I've been having trouble running all of the WIP as well as official releases (well, ive jumped around and all of the ones I tried on the WIP page and homepage). The only ones that seem to work are the ones at ZSNES Shrine http://www.zophar.net/zsnes/shrine/ . It's weird because it was around December that I was using the newest ZSNES releases daily. I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions off the top of your heads that may help? After I've unzipped ZSNES and try to run it, all my computer does is opens the black window and only gets a chance to create the config file and whatnot before it shuts the window. It doesn't even display an error message of any sort. Thanks for the help in advance!

Does the black window close right away or does it just sit there? If it just sits there you have to press alt+enter to go fullscreen.

I can think of two possibilities.

1) You haven't used a new version since Nach changed the .dat format to text. I'm not sure if this is even caused by not deleting the old .dat file, but it's worth a shot. To fix this, delete the *.dat and *.cfg files in the ZSNES directory. Then, extract the newest version of ZSNES into the directory and run zsnesw.exe.

2)Something with your video card drivers, maybe. Update your video card drivers. I can't find your motherboard on Asus's web site, but here is a link to the drivers from Intel's site: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts ... uctID=1044.

You know I havent even bothered to check, but what version of DirectX is needed for zsnes windows? And could an older version cause this problem?

I think ZSNES requires DirectX8 to run.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

hm, I went into the ZSNES directory and couldn't find the .dat file to delete but had no trouble finding the cfg. file. Perhaps a sign of the problem? I've already tried updating all of my drivers, including my graphics drivers. Just so everyone knows, this is my PC with the exception that I've upgraded the RAM to 1024 MB. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/gene ... =c00025829

here are the driver updates I mentioned earlier.

I'm also pretty sure I've got the latest Directx. Thanks for your help everyone!

Windows XP with and without SP1 comes with DirectX 8.1, while SP2 comes with DirectX 9.0c - either way, Windows XP ought to not have difficulties running ZSNES.

My advice to the OP - make sure you are using ZSNES for Windows and not DOS.

Clements: That's odd, because my Windows XP SP1 came with Direct X 9.0 ready-to-go.
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

SP1 comes with 8.1

DX9 was only released a month before SP1a was. the only difference between SP1 and SP1a is the latter has MSs JVM removed.

hm have we run out of ideas? I was really hoping to use ZSNES considering its just about the best snes emulator I've ever used but I guess I won't be able to. Either way, thanks alot for your help! Oh and by the way, yes I'm sure I'm using the windows version and not the DOS version.

Try scanning your system for spyware, adware, and viruses, just in case?
