Sound improvements in ZSNES

Post by pagefault »

I was wondering if you guys have noticed any difference in sound quality in the latest WIP vs 1.42. I have made some changes to the SPC in terms of accuracy and I was wondering if anyone noticed any difference. I am still working hard at trying to get this sounding better. If people could point out some problem games that would be helpful too.

It seems to be the same.. maybe slightly better (I don't really know... I only play a certain set of games so it's hard to know which games are most affected)..

Perhaps some of the time can be focused on to "fix" the "square rape" issue... of course I know it's a heated topic.. but isn't there some algorithm (or some idea) as to reproducing it as close as it can... w/o having it a "hack"?

It's hard to explain.. but I mean something like... try to emulate as much as the SPC rape as you possibly can.. but not make it so that it is "game dependent" to become a "hack"...

Sorry, I wish I had a better idea...

As I mentioned in previous threads I've noticed sound improvement since the other october WIPs... So I guess this means you already were told about that? Glad you decided to work on it, I'll download the latest WIP now and I'll report any differences I find.

I am now working on improving the sound in zsnes but I need some savestates of where the sound is wrong. Correct me if I am wrong but the main issue here is that sounds are playing differently every time they are played?

Well, I'm not sure if there were sound issues (if there were, there would be many threads about them, yes?)

I mentioned in a different thread about "missing" sounds when loading a savestate and it looks to have been fixed in a recent WIP (this bug were lingering for a while).. but I've yet to test it (I'm sure it's fine for the most part)

Hmm... now when I think about it.. I can barely tell nowadays where the "Square rape" can be felt.. I do recall a couple instances...

There's Heckran Cave in Chrono Trigger...

In FF3, when Terra first becomes an Esper.... she flies up into the sky... the sound is crap at that moment in time (when you see her fly around the overworld, it sounds just fine though).

I don't know every instance though...

I can easily get a state of Heckran Cave.. but getting to the Terra becoming an Esper part will take some time... (I've played enough FF3 hacks to feel bored).

Now... if I can get the motivation to play FF3 again...

Use either rapidshare.de or create a Geoshitties account and quit using yousendshit.

You didn't have to be nasty.. if say the bug reports forum post included a suggestion to goto sites to host their data.. I wouldn't be using such a shitty site.

All it needs is a mention and link of imageshack and rapidshare (perhaps these suggestions should be included in the bug reporting section of the documentation)... and then you wouldn't have this problem.

Can't you attach things to bug reports in BugZilla?

He could use this free no-signup service. http://www.hostfile.org/

As for the sound topic, I'll keep an ear out for some.

F-Zero Europe revision 1.0 (Checksum: Good 0xC2FC / CRC32: F1D8F5DA) -> Just load it and let it run. The engine noise is completely wrong.

Sound accuracy

Post by Spike »

Here's an easy place to find a sound inaccuracy.

Load up Super Mario World.

Go into any level and keep jumping and hitting a block that has nothing in it, you notice it makes variable thump noises rather than just the normal "thump" every time on a regular SNES.

Imo, best and most glaring example remains the monster scream in Chrono Trigger. For the (few) people that doesn't know how it should sound, try it with Bsnes. In Z, it's just a 'beeeeeep' sound.

Can be tested in 1 minute after beginning the game too (just head into the forest as soon as Chrono get out of the house)

Well, some of the time it sounds about there (not quite perfect).. though it should be a bit deeper in most cases

I thought about it for a minute.. and though I've played a lot of SMW.. I believe it was like that. I could be mistaken, but I didn't feel it was out of the ordinary.

Not sure if this is related to the thread topic, but I've noticed Super Castlevania 4 sounds WAY off compared to the actual cart, especially sound effects involving chains and such. Even the music to the first stage's entrance doesn't fade out correctly or at the right time. I noticed this a long time ago (at least a couple years) and was wondering if it was a known issue. My apologies if everyone has already discussed this problem.

Most games sound fantastic in Zsnes, but this one always bothered me how off it was.

I think a very clear example is Mario's spinning jump in SMW, the sound when you pick up a muchroom and grow bigger, but most obvious is the sound when you get hit by an enemy and shrink to small size, if you hear that last one you'll imediately know what's wrong.

Though I must say, unless it's just in my head, I'm hearing major improvements, especially when fast scrolling the cursor through the item list in FF6 or something, which sounded completely broken at first but seems almost accurate now.

Ok thanks for all your input guys. We are working hard to address these issues but we have a lot of things to fix right now so there is no estimate on when this fix will be out in a stable release.

Some of these things that's gonna be fixed are gonna take a while to fix the music

1) some games are rare and hard to find. Because they made so few (ie. Home Improvement), that some games are hard to find due to some mishaps like thrown games away or not working or etc.
2) Not every game had a usa release and are hard to obtain, though Tales of Phantasia shouldn't be a problem, but star ocean and ffV will be hard to obtain. due to lack of funds and such.
3) other stuff that i can't think of right now.

So yeah. that's what i'm getting from this. this could take years and may never be 100% finished.
