I would presume the DOS version doesn't require DirectX.

The DOS version doesn't require DirectX, and neither should the Linux version, since directx doesn't load there
The older versions of Zsnes for Windows use an older version of directx

Which version of Windows do you use? I think that Win98 can update to a DirectX version new enough to run ZSNES.

Also, DirectX is a free download from Microsoft (in case you didn't know ;))

Just curious, why do you want to avoid DirectX?

All Windows versions need Direct X, due to their use of Direct Input and Direct Sound.

The DOS version and Linux version do not. If you are running a Windows platform, and it's a decent one (500 Mhz+) there is no reason to not use the Windows version, and upgrading to the newest version of Direct X should have little (or most likely) no effect on the overall speed or stability of your box.

If, however, you have a fairly slow computer (233 mhz or below) then you should run the DOS version, anyhow. While you can run the Windows version, you should find the DOS version to be faster. However, that's speculation as I've not used the DOS version in a long time, and my computer is far too fast to have a noticable difference in either.

Hope that helps.

It's a shame Pagefault never went through with going back to DX7. I have a PC which has DX7 and I don't want to put DX8 or higher on it (it slows it down about 5%, which I don't like). But there's Snes9x for that PC :)

Are there some benefits from upgrading to DX8 emulation-wise?
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

I guess he'll have to stick with Snes9x 1.42 then. :(

Much better input support. You want to be able to use your cool controller to play with, right?

Yes, I suppose. Thanks for clearing things up.

That reminds me...
v1.42 is not the latest version.

(sorry if i am wrong)
Also, do you have any idea why when i try to load the roms, it doesn't show my directories so i can select the rom, its just all blank?
Is there something else i need to download or something i need to do to make it work?

Oops, I forgot that the WIP in question was for SNES9x, my bad.

<edit> I checked it, and it doesn't have that "gayed" up problem. Now, as for the directory, perhaps you have the wrong directory selected.

It's a known bug, read the Snes9x forums where it has been discussed at length.
