NullDC makes Soinc Adventure impossible to complete

Post by neo_bahamut1985 »

Okay, there is a very strange issue in Sonic Adventure (NTSC version, an iso rip) on the most recent version of NullDC (v1.6.). Soon after getting the Light Speed Dash in the sewer, I charge up, hit the switch that creates the rings that lead me out. Well, I know that this is not an issue with my gamepad or keyboard, but no matter what direction I face Sonic, he does not follow the rings! Whether or not this is an emulator issue, I don't know. It might some really strange anti-counterfeit function (like how certain versions of Earthbound generate larges amounts of enemies on the same screen). What the holy heck is going on?!

go buy the game then make a fresh copy and test it against the rip you downloaded?

Well, you need a special cable to hook to the Dreamcast to rip games, since Dreamcast discs are usually larger than the normal disc size limit, so I'd say that's next to impossible for him to do like that on-the-fly.

IIRC, nullDC cannot be used to play through SA1 100% through.

What the?! So, it's an emulation after all. Better wait for the next release (if there ever is one). Chankast doesn't fair any better AFAIK. That goes for Makaron Test, too.

And if he had a working Dreamcast, he'd probably be burning CD-Rs and playing that way.

But playing DC games on a CD-R doesn't work, since DC games have two data layers, do they not? Besides, using a cable to rip the game takes forever. I may be wrong, and if I am, please correct me.

It does. Some games you can overburn and fit completely on one CD-R.

playing games on a CD-R completely works. there's no protection on the disc, as the GD-ROM was supposed to be protection enough.

most games aren't even bigger than a CD, anyway. i have yet to see one that was, actually.

What do you mean by "overburn". Sonic Adventure is only ~700MB, so, I might try it then. But, would that truly resolve the whole "light speed dash not working on a downloaded iso" issue?

I believe it to be an issue with the emulator itself. I'm sure the developer(s) know already. :)

you can't know for sure if it's an issue with the ISO until you try it on the hardware, now can you?

overburn is a simple option in most recorder programs, it attempts to right past the normal end of a disc since all discs tend to be a random amount bigger then 700mb...

Heck, I don't even have a modded Dreamcast, so, I'll wait until the NullDC developers fix it, which won't be for some time...crap...

Bear in mind many DC ISOs floating around the web have had their videos/audio tracks re-encoded to be smaller.

DC games are single-layer. They're an extreme tweak of CD technology.

Modded? What is this "mod" of which you speak?

A stock DC will boot CD-Rs.

I thought you had to get a modchip on a dreamcast to get it to run backups...

Nope. Most games are self-booting, others need a Utopia boot CD. :)

okay i didn't know about re-encoding, i only knew about taking out all the dead space.

i'm still not sure i played a game that suffered from either of those, or if i did, the effect was minimal.

@other guy
i'm surprised that you've owned a dreamcast for as long you have and didn't know that CD-R's work fine.

There's also some that just chop things out. Those are embarassing.

Get the PC version of Sonic Adventure DX. You could probably find it off of any of those large torrent indexing sites, ebay or some online shop if you're willing to pay. The game is so easy that it probably wouldn't take you very long to get back to where you were.
