Super Mario RPG Save Troubleshooting

Post by PyroMario »

Hey I'm having problems saving Super Mario RPG. Every time I save it in game, the ZSNES won't create a .srm file for Super Mario RPG. I have my rom on my computer in a folder named SNES RPG, so I expected ZSNES to create a .srm file in that folder since the readme states that save files are made and sent to the same folder of the rom, but I still get no .srm file. Is there anything I have to fix? I am somewhat computer illiterate, so if you can answer my question, please don't throw complicated computer terms at me. Thank you.

What version of ZSNES are you using? If you are using a version older than 1.50, the space in the folder's name is most likely the problem.

I am using the most recent version of ZSNES, so I don't think the version is the problem.

It's still helpful if you mention what version exactly (sometimes you may have downloaded an older version).

Also, are you loading the game from a CD-ROM/DVD?

I'm using version 1.51. Also, both the rom and emulator are saved on my computer. I have all of my ZSNES files in a folder named ZSNES, and the SNES RPG Folder that I created is within the ZSNES folder.

Edit the Save Directory via Config->Paths and tell ZSNES that's the folder you wish to use (you need to know the full path when you are entering it there).

Alright, I will try that later and see if it works. Thank you. I'll let you know if the problem persists.

The .srm file was still not created. Is there anything else I can do to fix the problem?

Is the path to your file extremely long?

Try shortening it as much as possible...

For instances, you don't want the folders on your desktop, because the path becomes needlessly long (and there are limits AFAIK)...

For example, it would look like this:

C:\Documents and Settings\(Current Login Name)\Desktop\etc...

Shortening it to folders like C:\SNES_Games\etc... would simplify things much better.

I'll give you the path directory so you can see if it is too long or not:

C:\Documents and Settings\(Login Name)\My Documents\ZSNES\SNES RPG\

Is this too long, or should it be shortened?

Just move the ZSNES folder to C:\ so the path is much more managable.

I'm sorry, but that didn't work either. The folder still has no .srm for Super Mario RPG. Could the quality of the rom affect ZSNES' ability to create save files?

Well, if it is a good dump, it should be fine. Run it through NSRT or paste all the info that ZSNES provides to you when the game is loaded.

Well, I found this text document called rominfo in my ZSNES folder. Here is what it says:

This is the info for the last game you ran.

File: SuperMarioRPG.smc Header: No
Evil ROM Site TYPE:SA-1
INTERLEAVED:No CHKSUM:FAIL
VIDEO:NTSC BANK:Lo CRC32:241772DB
BAD ROM

Could this be the reason why it is not saving? I have to go to class now, so I'll see you later.

Mod Edit: Removed evil ROM site link

There's a damn good chance that's the case, because that rom site does so many BAD things to the ROM.

Thanks for the info. I'll try to get a better rom and see if that corrects the problem. Sorry for including the site, I was simply pasting what the text file said.

Alright, I got a better rom, but I'm still not able to do in game saves. Is there anything else that could prevent ZSNES from creating .srm files?

Is the save folder marked as Read-only?

You could also try enabling SRAM Check+Save.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

Yes, I have SRAM check+save enabled. I'm soory to seem computer illiterate, but how do you chack to see if the save directory is read-only and how do you change it?

Right click the folder and make sure everything is allowed in the Security tab.

Also, it helps a lott to post the new info of the ROM you've downloaded

Here is the new data of my rom:

This is the info for the last game you ran.

File: SUPER MARIO RPG.smc Header: No
SUPER MARIO RPG TYPE:SA-1
INTERLEAVED:No CHKSUM:OK
VIDEO:NTSC BANK:Lo CRC32:1B8A0625

I just turned off the read only on my ZSNES and SNES RPG files, but it still didn't produce a .srm file.

EDIT: I just checked my SNES RPG file, and the Read-Only was checked again every time I try to uncheck it and hit apply, it just keeps reapplying it. How do I keep it from doing this?

The folder has to be set as well, not just the files.

I did set the folders, but like I said above, they just keep getting set back to read-only. How do I fix this?
