Video Compression Discussion
I have a load of uncompressed videos eating up my hard drive from my digital camera. the average video is about 100MB per minute, 640x480, 18,000kbps. what I want is to compress them, losing 0-5% of quality. I just want to store them in highest quality, then later edit, convert, compress etc. it'd be nice if they could go right on some of my devices. the internets say h.264 would work on my ipod, psp, and even my old ass blackberry pearl 8100. my main concern is quality loss, 0-5% or so with smallest file size, this uncompressed shit is just silly.

It's comparable with MP3 etc. - at the highest quality setting you'll only see a difference after several encodings. H264 should be fine, just use a quantizer of 1. Maybe two passes, but it's probably not worth it.
Lossless codecs (Lagarith, CamStudio, ZMBV) won't free up much space.

x.264 at ~4 MBps would have next to no quality loss. DVD's run 720x480 MPEG-2 at around 4 MBps. a better codec at about the same bitrate with a lower resolution should definitely keep everything without getting all youtube-ish. at least that's my logic.
you could go as low as 1.5 MBps (i use 1004 KBps for ipod conversions, but it shows if you fullscreen it. at native res, it looks fine).
i always do 2 passes, as well.

using corel video studio 12, I can compress a 22 minute 640x480 clip that's 2.3GB, down to 200MB without noticable quality loss at 1024kbps with h.264. I'm happy, just wish I could find a nice codec to play my videos back, don't want to open this corel shit every time I want to watch a vid.
