If its tainted wouldn't an md5sum or crc or something versus the one on the site currently prove wether or not they are the same?

Vista keep asking me for permission on bsnes with upx. After I build one without upx the problem went away. Wtf is that all about anyway?

I install update Vista patch and it complain over upx compress.

False positives is the upx compress.

Specialized compression for executables is a defunct idea. UPX on both the user and developer end consumes more time than it saves.

I have to agree. 7zip or RAR for distribution would be better, imho.

it is highly probable that its a false warning because of to high heuristic
I don't even give my Windows dev box internet access. Learned my lesson after Blaster on XP SP0, haven't trusted it since.

The executable is clean, but your virus scanner is worthless garbage; that still doesn't realize we live in a post-signature world. AVs need to rely on heuristics (what the program actually tries to do / access), not marking any binary with 'UPX' in it as a virus.

If you want, run upx -d bsnes_v040.exe, and the warning should go away.

Don't know. Not a problem with the Windows 7 beta.

Good idea. Let's distribute the single-file bsnes.exe inside an archive format that 90% of computers don't even have, so it can't run directly after download, and make the resulting distribution 10-15% bigger so it eats even more bandwidth. And for bonus points, slower hard drives will take a speed hit having to load 11MB from disk instead of 2.4MB.

We've covered this already, I'm happy with UPX. You can remove it if you want.

I prefer UPX, but for kicks, let me argue the other side that you could package bsnes in self-extracting 7z/rar .exe in which case "Good idea. Let's distribute the single-file bsnes.exe inside an archive format that 90% of computers don't even have" isn't so much of a problem

:P

Wow it drop. 10.7mb to 6.66mb. Good work byuu.

I didn't use upx at all. I don't use it anyway.

after using upx with

upx -d bsnes_v040.exe

the warning is gone :-)

hmmmm may be u should release bsnes unpacked too
(i think most people dont have upx to do it before using bsnes)
to avoid problems

unpacked bsnes is about 11 mb
downloading 11 mb or 3,5 mb makes no huge difference today

people with slow modems are rare today

Thanks, but the problem isn't on my end, it's with worthless Windows anti-virus software. By working around it, I encourage said behavior to continue. But by refusing to, it'll help put pressure on these companies to write proper software instead of selling snake oil.
