I can't install zsnes on linux

Post by linseed »

You have no idea how long I've been looking for to solve this problem. I'm using an Acer Aspire one with linux linpus lite and I have no idea how to use source code. I just know how to use windows. When I click on open, it says that I should choose an application to open it with. I have gone o further, and I can't find a solution anywhere on the internet.

I did some research and it looks like zsnes runs just fine on an acer aspire one. In fact, it says it's the best emulator for such a computer, but it doesn't say how to install it.

Any help?

I'll check back every day for answers, but you can also respond at linceed@gmail.com

<b> EDIT: I installed Fedora, it took me HOURS to do, but I did it, now I can try and play zsnes.... WAIT

Can you help me, please?

</b>

Isn't there a way to use Synaptic or something to install it? And this isn't really a bug report, is it?

It should be obvious then you want to either

1- use windows
2- learn how to use linux

It's like asking how do you skate on ice when you only know how to walk. Either you keep to walking or you learn how to skate.

Maybe you can help him learn how to 'skate'

That's not going to be that helpful in general... if I've learned anything from the DOS/9x days, is that there is a lot of power in the command line and people who aren't willing to learn for themselves on what to do are setting themselves up for failure... in this case, Linux.

This is a board about ZSNES.
He can get much better help from a board made for learning linux.

You don't ask your local butcher to teach you how to skate, now do you ?

linux linpus lite
LOL Linpus (and linux :P )

My Acer Aspire came with that distro as well. It hardly has anything useful in it. So you are not going to have much luck with it.

You should install Windows(XP) and/or Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu linux first.

Well, you still have to use command prompts for many things you can't do in the GUI, so in many ways it is more powerful.

linpus appears to be a redhat derivative and therefore will likely have rpm as a package manager.

look for any references to "rpm" in the gui... barring that, you can drop to a console (command prompt) and try

Code: Select all

man rpm
for usage of the textmode version (if the manual shows up, then rpm is installed).

if you do have rpm, then i'm sure we'll be able to provide a little more help.

the biggest thing is using linux requires the willingness to research the little problems or complications that come up. if you don't have the patience or desire to do that, you're better off switching to windows.

The question is, if you are just starting with Linux, why are you using some obscure version that nobody has ever heard of? If you are a noob, you should be using one of the established distros, like Fedora, Suse or Ubuntu.

it was preloaded on his netbook - he didn't install it himself.

There are models with Windows according to my google search, but it's possible linseed did not know that.

I am aware of that. I still put the question out there.

given the basic question he asked, i would expect he has no clue how to install a different distro, either.

I'm not very knowledgeable about netbooks, however, I'd reckon Windows being somewhat of an unnecessary heavy weighter for such computers. Might be wrong though.

They can run Windows XP just fine

I believe SquareHead ran either Windows Vista or 7 on his, and it worked, however it was sluggish.

that being said, if you get a netbook, be prepared to either buy an external CD/DVD drive or at least a IDE to USB converter (assuming of course you have a spare CD/DVD drive, barring that you can always buy another one.)

I typed "RPM" in the terminal and got this:

Possible options for the rpm binary installed on your system.

e.g. rpm --package pack.rpm

considering your distro and you using rpm, I would introduce you to linux, but I suck at rpm terribly

anything with the deb package system is easier to learn on imo cause of apt-get, then after that venturing to tgz or portage and stuff

rpm is just such a pain in the butar
