Zsnes should be in the Ubuntu repositories. Just open up Synaptic, search for Zsnes, and right click to install.
<pagefault> i'd break up with my wife if she said FF8 was awesome

Some extra links for you just in case. I'm not a linux user though and I'm not even sure if you're using ubuntu since you said linux 9.04.

Note: It is only available in the universe repository, which is not enabled (IIRC) on default Ubuntu installations. Furthermore, it is only available as a 32-bit package, so if you are running 64-bit Ubuntu you will need to install ZSNES via some other method.

It seems that universe and mulitverse are enabled by default since 7.04 (Feisty Fawn): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... +bug/91355

./zsnes will launch zsnes only from the current directory.
Or you can avoid the third command if you don't want to install it and prefer launching zsnes from the source directory.
