Am I stuck or is it a bug? (Super Mario RPG)

Ok, I'm REALLY new at this stuff.
I can't go any further in Super Mario RPG.
I'm in Boosters Tower and I can't make the jump from One platform to the next. I've bounced around looking for any "secrets" and I have found nothing to aid me in breaching the gap.
Sooooo, am I missing something....or is it a bug??

You have to run while you jump.

It has been years since I played through SMRPG.

Are you talking about the room where you have to use the springboard?
