ZSnes somehow kills Google Chrome..? (Windows 7 x32)

Post by Mikenno »

I apologize in advanced, as this will be lengthy, but I want to make sure all the details are very clear as to what I did exactly to make sure it wasn't Zsnes breaking things, but alas. :\

--

I've been using Google Chrome for quite some time as my default browser. I began using it when I initially had Vista on my desktop PC, as well as my laptop, and continued to use it efficiently without error when I upgraded to Windows 7 x32.

It's worth noting I have not used ZSnes on my Windows 7 OS until today.

Today I decided to boot up ZSnes 1.42 to do some online play, as I believe that was the last version to have it before it was removed.
(I'd like to note that prior to today, ZSnes has NEVER caused a problem like this. Not on Vista on my old desktop nor this laptop I'm on now.)

Moving on, when I booted up ZSnes 1.42, it was after I had installed a driver to run a PS3 controller on my system that had been a successful mission for many others, and it worked just fine for me as well.

I went to open Google Chrome and was suddenly slapped with that infamous error:

"Application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005)"

This seems to be a generally common error among Windows Vista/7 here and there (according to my Google research), so I did a system restore to remove the Ps3 controller driver, assuming it broke something along the way when I had to disable driver signature enhancement on boot up, and turned everything back to normal.

I went through the same processes I had prior to opening Zsnes. I checked Google Chrome by booting it up over 30 times after every single process I performed to ensure it wasn't broken again. Seemed alright, so I loaded up ZSnes and the same application error rose again.

System Restore #2 and the system is fine again. Loaded Google Chrome; it was okay. I loaded up ZSnes 1.42 again. Loaded up Google Chrome; Same error immediately after ZSnes was loaded.

System Restore #3. I loaded up Google Chrome after each action performed; no error. I tried ZSnes 1.51. Google Chrome didn't bring up an error, but now the browser completely locks up and is unable to perform.

System Restore #4. Same situation after System Restore #3.

As you can see, I ran these tests multiple times to determine the cause of the problem. I'm using Chrome at this very moment with no issues and haven't tried running Zsnes since.

Please do not suggest I try to use the "--no-sandbox" solution as I don't prefer to run Chrome without Sandbox functioning.

Here's my system information from DXDiag. I'm not exactly sure what's relevant or not, so I just copy and pasted the text file.

Yes, it does continue to occur after ZSnes is closed.

And sorry, I did forget to mention I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Chrome, but to no avail. That was what actually encouraged me to do the System Restore in the first place when the reinstall proved futile. :\

I did try a reinstall after System Restore #2 as well, but it didn't work.

check for bad RAM. if your system is fine, file a bug report on chrome.

Well aren't you all full of useful information?

Is there a specific and easier way to do this besides ripping each one out of my laptop?

It doesn't care if it is x64 or x86 so long as it is either and never neither.

Sorry I took so long to get back to posting my progress.

Unfortunately I'm not 100% computer savvy, so even through the help of Google, I was having a horrible time trying to figure the Memtest program out. In short, I wasn't able to utilize it.

Is there any other way to test the memory issue, or can someone link me to some instructions that are easy to understand?

Basically, you burn a copy of memtest to a CD (you'll need to tell your burning program you want to burn an image to disk)

pop said memtest CD into your CD drive

reboot, adjust boot order in your computer's setup program (you'll have to find out which key accesses it, it varies) if needed

and the memtest CD should boot right up and let you run it.
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

Excellent, thank you for this. It worked.

So it would appear that there's no errors found in the memory itself, so it's Chrome just being incompatible with ZSnes, for some reason.

This is bizarre. Back on Vista on three diffreent systems (My desktop, my laptop, and my friend's laptop), this has never happened. I was using both Chrome and ZSnes perfectly fine. :\
