Mac G3 (Blue & White)

Post by ReRuss »

First off I never play with macs, but anyway...

I got this G3, I know it has like 768mb sdram, and for some reason it had 2 ati rage 128 cards...

I tried pluggin it in and it turned on but I had no video from either card, no beeps or whistles, and I wanna have a rough idea of what it probably is...

When I tested it, it was plugged into my acer lcd that I use for normal PC stuff, no keyboard or mouse were connected, no speakers either

Fans kicked on, hard drives were bein kicked in and possibly read based on vibrations every now and then, disc drive seemed alright

I'm not sure if either video card works

I know if had 2 ATi Rage 128 cards
2 ATA HDDs (diff brands) both 40GB I think
400 MHz (Sonnet?)
768MB pc133 sdram (stock was 64mb I'm guessing)

if there's no apple bong, it's not completing the equivalent of POST.

pull one of the video cards and all but one of the dimms (they're probably all 256MB, but if it's 1x512 2x128 make it one of the 128MB ones).

while you're in there, look for bad caps and scorch marks on the motherboard and all ICs, and sniff the power supply for that lovely burned-electronics smell.

Ok I have the newer of the two video cards in there, I tried each stick of ram and I got 3 beeps on one of them, nothin happened with another, and one stick I got video

So atm, I have a 256 in there (first one I got video with), and another 256 in slot 2 (boots up with video), and tossed aside the one that gave the beeping

I get the bong, an apple logo comes up, then goes to the stop logo (or whatever it is)

I didn't have a mouse or keyboard plugged in, which I would assume it's complaining about

If it's somethin that small it'd be awsome...

Can the G3 accept a normal USB keyboard by chance?

indeed, but ymmv - don't expect "special" keys to be mapped sanely (or exist at all).

I believe this mac developped sentience and is pleading you to help it out of its misery.

Ahh okies

I got a PS/2 keyboard working via usb adapter, and got Finnix to boot off a disc so I know it'll boot a disc...

Guess I'll try runnin an OSX disc see how that goes, if that all works out I'll try finding some parts to bring it up a notch...

After tons of searching, I got OSX 10.4 Tiger and it's installed and working

I also found that the newer stick of ram seemed to be problematic, but I can settle with 512mb

I'll play with it more tomorrow, try tweakin it a bit for some speed, throw firefox on it, some codecs, few apps, and some emus

my guess is that his existing PC is already more than capable of playing the far easier-to-find PC versions of those games.

if you're going to recommend any games, they should probably be mac-exclusives like Marathon et al.

Bugdom is a pretty sweet Mac game. I played the shit out of it on the computers in elementary school.

My school had shit on he computers for games. Aside from educational games, I recall this odd tetris type game that had a lot of odd special bricks that'd do weird stuff and had sound I think. Other than that, lots of Mavis Beacon and some other typing thing with furry anthropomorphic animals.

I think gaming isn't gonna be somethin I'll do, unless there's something mac-exclusive I wanna try

In the end, it'll probably be cleaned up and given to my mom, since she'd have more use of it than I would

EDIT - I also found some sdram ram that works fine with it, bumps it up to 768mb, and when I checked the specs to make sure it recognized it fine, I noticed it actually had the 733MHz G4 upgrade

So I sanded down the apple scuffs and glazed em, and swapped the G3 stickers for something that screamed 1999
