SRM Save Files

Post by JimmyKerrigan »

All of my .smc roms, .zip roms, .zst save files and .srm save files are in the same directory as zsnesw.exe. I'm using the latest version, 1.51.

I cobbled this folder together from a folder previously containing all of these files. I have pointed ZSNES' save path to this folder. When I launch Chrono Trigger my game is there. My dudes are in their 40s, blah blah blah.

I can launch my pilotwings and Super Baseball 2020 .zst saves with ZSNES no problem.

What I CAN'T do is get Super Mario RPG or Earthbound to recognize their own SRM save files. Chrono Trigger works. These two don't.

Have I corrupted the SRMs?

Actually, I just opened them with Notepad. Chrono Trigger has the gobbeldygook I expect. Earthbound just has the studio name repeating :(. It's dead.

BUT, Super MArio's has even MORE gobbeldygook but it doesn't load any saved games!

I am super heartbroken that my last Earthbound save file is dead. I know for a fact I had one from the last few years... I'm going to start re-attaching old hard drives to look for it!

I forgot that I also can't get Yoshi's Island to work for the life of me. Not my old one and not any new ones that I download. It just gives me a black screen. I'm positive it had worked in the past.

Reduce the size of your sig or it'll be removed.

Define "in the past".

Check your ROM with NSRT. There's a possibility that the ROM is interleaved. If so, deinterleave the ROM.
whicker: franpa is grammatically correct, and he still gets ripped on?
sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

Thanks for the tips, gentlemen. Sorry about the sig but it's most glorious in its original resolution.

The past would be 3-4 years and using ZSNES 1.51.

Ok, for Yoshi's Island. I think I got this NSRT thing working and I scanned it and it said that it is Interleaved in the Super FX style, that its region is Euro/Asia/Oceania and that the video is PAL. Would this be an issue? This is the result of running nf.exe. When I run NSRT.exe or ipsedit.exe a lil dow window opens and then closes before I can even read anything.

A ha! Ignore that. I went in to the options of nf.exe and checked the de-interleave bit and it fixed Yoshi's island for me.

Now if I could only either find an old copy of my Earthbound save file or fix the one that I have I would be a happy, happy man.

Ok, I've looked at the SRM save file for Earthbound in a hex editor and it doesn't really illuminate things further. Any way I can upload it to the forum or does anyone volunteer to have it e-mailed to them to see if it is alive or not?

I could publish the output of the hex editor but is whole lot of 00s.

<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

Really, two things stand out in my mind. I was either in Scaraba or at the very last save point before Giygas. I suppose I should just replay the thing whole on my big screen with the sound turned way up.

I converted the .spcs to high bit-rate mp3s ages ago and have Earthbound and Chrono Trigger's soundtrack (as well as the Curse of Monkey Island) on permanent rotation in my playlist.

Earthbound isn't a game. It's a life-style.

What do you think I used to play the .spcs and output them to MP3? Do you have any MP3 players, iPods, or CD Players that I can install an SPC emulator on to?

If you were really near Giygas, I've got an EB save at that point...

Hehe, I wish someone would do this for the iphone. I'm kinda surprised there isn't even a homebrew player for anything like this. There's an appstore SID player and a homebrew mikmod frontend, but other than that, no actual video game format players. I guess there's some technical restriction blocking any of the libraries from working well. I'd try but I don't feel like dicking around with stupid xcode or objective c.

Just do what I did and use the .spc plug-in for WinAmp and change the output to the disk writer and specify MP3s of your chosen bit-rate. Produces really clean, nice-sounding files that you can play where-ever, how-ever. Add all the meta-data and album art you like and have this really eerie feeling every time Earthbound's box art whizzes past in cover flow.

SID isn't a video game format?

And every time I see this thread, I think I've wandered into some obnoxious anime board with offensive image sigs left and right.
Then I realize it's all one poster. On the other hand, I think it's the most offensive obnoxious anime image sig I've ever seen.

I'm sure he meant video game music format? And why not also point out that mod isn't either?

I'm rather proud that you said that because it was designed as obnoxious propaganda for my country on cybernations.net.

But it is series specific so I suppose it could pass as an obnoxious Gundam Seed signature. All the better!

But SID IS a video game music format.

Unless you're going to tell me people used Commodore 64s for something other than games.

Either way, it's the most offensive sig pic I've ever seen, and if this were the old days, it'd have been replaced with ISuck.gif..

Maybe you can explain what's supposed to be offensive about it, since I only see it as "just another retarded signature image."

Most. Offensive. Ever.

I deserve a trophy for that.

It hits new levels of retarded. And it's Gundam SEED!

Yeah yeah. No one can handle Seed being the best Gundam series. I love watching people squirm trying to pretend otherwise.

I have no opinion on Gundam Seed, or much of any Gundam series. I stopped watching all of those shows years ago, just like I stopped watching Cartoon Network altogether. I also stopped downloading anime.
