My laptop won't even play it because apparently I don't have support for pixel shading.

trying to play a 3d game on an 8-year-old laptop is generally an exercise in futility.

(portal requires full dx8.1 compatibility. given that dx8.1 was released in late 2001, i would expect the laptop in question to be no newer than q4 2002.)

It's a ThinkPad T42, so 2004 I believe.

I never intended it to be my primary computer; that happened when the motherboard on my desktop died, which given that it must have been eight years old at the time, really shouldn't have come as a surprise. I've been meaning to piece together a new rig ever since, but somehow the money always finds its way somewhere else. Go figure.

Let's not forget even some recent craptops that come with Intel GMA graphics hardware, which means they'll probably also have a hard time playing this game.

hard time, indeed, but won't error out.

anyway, need to revise my previous assessment. dx8.1 was the gf3/radeon8500... it WAS quite a while until the mobile chips achieved feature parity, since both camps were basing them off the "value" hardware at the time (which were gf2-/r7000- and later gf4mx-based).

but again, buying any thinkpad at that time and expecting to do any gaming is shooting yourself in the foot. at that time, thinkpads were intended for business use first and foremost, so no matter how top of the line cpu&chipset might have been, the resto of the system was built with maximum OS compatibility in mind.

I suppose if I'd been thinking ahead then I could have better spent the money I did on something more gaming-friendly, but like I said, I never intended it to be a gaming computer. I bought it refurbished off eBay because I needed something mobile to bring with me on vacation was all.

To bring on your vacation and do... what? Watch porn? Do homework/work?

Well porn is a given. But no, just something to have to keep me connected to the Internet for the most part.
