I'd recommend switching back to the old laptop. That's the only way you'll get your larger LCD back.

I have no idea what that is supposed to mean.
If you're using fullscreen, changing the res does change your desktop, but that shouldn't matter too much. Ideally, you want to use a custom resolution so that it is the same size as the desktop (because fullscreen allows ONLY what your monitor/video card lists as resolutions).
If you're using windowed, changing the res changes the size of the ZSNES window. Custom resolutions are ideal here.
