Now with more Unity, which I've already seen Evan_G mention as reason for considering other distributions.

This may be more than enough reason to rebuild my linux installation (yet again )..
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

If you're already using Ubanto, why do you need to rebuild it? Isn't there some sort of distribution upgrade system?

I tried upgrading the distro once before, it completely went kaputs on me; hell I kept getting I/O errors trying to use konsole and gnome-terminal!

It's easy until you look at the documentation, try what is suggested, realize it doesn't work, ask about it on the forum, get laughed at for being a noob, about a month later get told about another place in there documentation documenting the same thing and having that work.

I wanted to install display drivers, theres one that talks about compiling the nvidia drivers, do a bunch of stuff in a terminal and that did not work at all, eventually I found out another page of the documentation stating to download the official binaries from Nvidia and run the installer >.> or something to that effect.

Arch is even greater, and has better documentation than Ubuntu. That said, Ubuntu's docs really aren't that bad. If there is missing information, look elsewhere, fill in the gaps.

you can look at it in two ways:
- it's useless, I'm not using it
- it's something that I have the power to improve.

Ubuntu docs are world-writeable.
But apparently are useless as DOCUMENTATION.

Telling someone to fix the docs isn't very helpful.
Nor is laughing at people asking why the (incorrect) instructions in the docs don't work.

Yeah, I find some really outdated stuff as far as documentation goes for ubuntu. World-writability is fine, but there needs to be some kind of coordinated effort to keep stuff up to date, even if it is somewhat obscure topics, at least prune it or label it clearly as being outdated to prevent people trying stuff that would've been relevant to an older version.
Maybe these people were born without that part of their brain that lets you try different things to see if they work better. --Retsupurae

Outdated documentation? Impossible!

The problem ultimately is that the documentation is useless until someone bothers to update it months later. Like everyone that adopts new stuff, you have to live with the fail that exists until someone figures it out for you.

Don't forget to,

Code: Select all

free the fish
Or the lead from your bullets will leak into the water and poison the fish.

You don't want that fish trapped. Let is swim freely all over your Gnome desktop.
