Save states: Please sir, can I have s'more?

Post by Zallus »

Problem: It'd be very nice to have more fine-grained control over save states. It's annoying to have to copy/rename roms for things like "Chrono Trigger (U).ending screens.zs2", or "Yoshi's Island (V1.0) (U).bandit houses.zs6".

A solution: Perhaps there could be a menu

Code: Select all

for saving and loading states? This could also be re-used for zmv files. This would nicely eliminate the need for ten different .zs? extensions.
A file format could also be created [just renamed (insert favourite archival/compression library/ies here) file] to contain an arbitrary set of states, perhaps ".zsa", or something like that. Each ROM image file would basically get its own little virtual directory for states, which you could give descriptive names. Of course, some limits could still be imposed (no directories inside the file makes sense), but the current artificial ten-items-or-less limit seems a bit arbitrary.
