Ok, I need someone to tell me EXACTLY what to do to make the DeJap Star Ocean ROM to work.
When i last downloaded it, it looked like crap, with tiles as sprites.

I have 1.40.
It still doesn't work, it doesn't even start, it's just a black screen.
And I think Oblivion said "click on StarOcean.smc".
The thing is, it's a .zip, not a .smc.
I have SMCREN, but it doesn't help.

The rom seems..."dead".

Need more help, guys!

Then your rom IS dead, scan it with nsrt and post your results.

It really doesn't make much difference if it's a zip or an smc.

Unless compressed archive support broke at some point, which didn't happen to my knowledge.

Call me stupid, but what is NSRT?
And by the way, it would be strange if it really is dead, I downloaded it from DeJap's site.
And if I need NSRT, where can I get it?

NSRT is a comand line tool that veryfies your ROM and tells you if it is useless or not. When you played the ROM did you check ZSNES log file? It is in the folder where you played your last ROM. Play Star Ocean and look what it says expecially on the checksum. If it is a bad checksum delete the ROM and find another because I think you have a corrupted ROM. Did you scan a prepatched game? Because if you hard patched a game you have firs to red the readme file of the translation to see if you need ROM with header or without it.

You are trying to run the .ips file alone?? You need the rom file too...

In short, the IPS file only contains the translation. It's not the game itself.

I wish this had been the first time someone tried to open the translation patch alone. I really wish it was.

Damn it, now I have all the files, but it's still just black!
WHY would DeJap have a broken ROM?
And yes, I did unzip them.
Yes, I tried all the files.
Yes, it's still black.

Geez...help!

Yeah, I know there are plenty of incorrectly dumped Star Ocean ROMs out there. I got barraged with questions about them back when the beta patch came out :X

This is what the "rominfo" file says:

File: Star Ocean.zip Header: No

And buy Nintendo DS.

Looks like a bad rom. Get another one.

Although, if ZSNES already tried to autopatch the game, then checksum would fail regardless. However, seeing the SNES header so garbled, it could very well be bad.

At least since the last time I used the auto-patch, the checksum is taken before the soft-patch, so if the checksum is good, it should show up good.

First of I'd like to tell you that ALL my ROMs says Checksum: Fail, and they're working.

Now, what should I do about this?
Just start looking for another one?

EDIT:
There are only IPS files in this shit.
And one .idx and one .dat in the graphics compression pack.
No ROM file.

Not unheard of. The thing that makes the checksum fail might be one byte of graphical data in one screen that you'd never see. Others are irreversably bad dumps, which it looks like yours is.

Oblivion: I guess they must've changed it recently, then, because I haven't used the autopatcher since about 1.36 or so.

Ah, ok then. Personally, I rarely use auto-patching.
