New Video Card

Post by AntoineWG »

I've decided to spend part of my tax refund check on a new video card to replace my aging bottlenecking Chaintech GeForce4 Ti4200 128MB AGP4x that I've had for nearly 3 years.

I'm leaning towards this one, another Chaintech, but a GeForce6 6600 GT 128MB AGP8x for $208 after tax and shipping, $195 if I pick it up, and a $40 rebate. Anybody think it's a good idea? Bad idea?

That sounds like a good purchase. I'm getting a similar card soon.

Really. I have the money now. Finally.

Good idea. I probably would not get a Chaintech but at the end of the day a 6600GT is a 6600GT, and you've been happy with the Ti4200 from them.

Personally, I'm still deciding between a 6800nu and 6600GT, and Leadtek and Galaxy. The card will at the very least 3 times faster than what I have now in most stuff, and in DX9, much more.

I think you should should give your 'aging' GeForce4 Ti4200 card to me being that I have a REALLY aging Geforce2 card! :P

You sure it's your card that is a 4x card and not that you have a 4x AGP motherboard? I thought all GF4 ti* was AGP8X.

AFAIK, NVIDIA released the Ti series in AGP 4x first, and when AGP 8x came onto the scene the GeForce 4 Ti line (and also GeForce 4 MX line) were updated to AGP 8x. These were the Ti4200-8x and the Ti4800 (an AGP 8x Ti4600). I don't think there were Ti4400-8x's.

Yes, several months after the GF4 Ti's came out at 4x, 8x boards hit the market. Before they hit, I bought the card at 4x because my motherboard was 4x. Now my nForce2 board supports 8x and my card is bottlenecked at 4x. They did release special editions of the 4200, 4600 and 4800 in an 8x variety, but I think it was after the FX line was released.

Hmmm, I've actually been considering the same (kinda) card for my computer. I've got a VisionTek Ti4200, but was looking at buying an nForce4 board and PCI-Express version of the 6600GT.

I've heard not much but good things about both AGP and PCI-Express lines, but then again I haven't done all -too- much research yet (Purchase is still about 2 months off).
