What linux distro do you use?

Post by SquareHead »

I'm just curious. If your a Linux user, what distribution do you use, and why?
I have been thinking of tossing my old Mandrake 10.0 installations for something new.

None right now, because every one I've tried has grated on my nerves somehow.

But then, I haven't tried a recent (< 1 year old) Linux distro, so maybe things have changed a bit.

You should add Ubuntu. I know at least 2 people on this board use it.

If you can't, I'll just put down Debian

I don't use Linux and therefore have no business posting in this thread, but I like/use FreeBSD.

FreeBSD and Gentoo have a lot in common

I'm tempted to install gentoo, it looks to be really good. From what I read on distrowatch, its the one that compiles completely from source if you want it to right? The first thing I would think is that doing that would be beneficial, but in truth, would it be any faster than to install pre-compiled binaries?

The only linux box currently running in my house is my SmoothWall 2.0 box. I said custom, but it's debian-based.

Maybe a little bit, unless you happen to choose CFLAGS which actually make the app slower, which is quite possible. Also, compiling large things like KDE can take days.

As far as I know, the free Red Hat is now Fedora.

That's what I run anyway. I only run Linux on occasion, and it more than suits my needs, although I was a little surprised it doesn't run NTFS without a seperate driver.

Seeing as how the majority of my computer time is for gaming, I have no use for linux.

Days on what system? On an athlon 1900+ I can compile the entire KDE set of packages (including kdebase and all the addons) in just a few hours.

I use Kondara Linux, a Japanese distribution based on Red Hat Linux.

I run it on my PS2

On PC's though I use FreeBSD.

No shit? The last time I tried compiling it was with FreeBSD on a Pentium-M 1.4 GHz, which should be at least as fast as that Athlon XP. It took almost 36 hours. That was without kde-office and kde-games.
