Feedback for relatively minor cosmetic change

Post by grinvader »

SURPRISE

1- are you interested in a feature allowing this change
2- do you think this example looks good

I sucked at some letters and accept help/fixes/propositions from artistically gifted people.

These are the main symbols this feature could alter: (5x5 font)
0123456789ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ-_~./<>[]:&#="\*?%+,()@'!$;`^{}
also, ↓ (down arrow == first menu), some other arrows (the up/down/left/right + 'delete' from the key combo menu) and the symbols on the minimize/maximize buttons

Worthy of note : the 'X' letter is also used for the 'close' button...

What does it look like with HQ2X? I don't think it looks very good like that.

Is it kind of just an italicized version of the original font?

It decreases readability for me, but that may be just because I'm not used to it. I'd certainly want to keep the option of using the original font, if you were to put this in.

I like the original more, but the font that you setup is not so bad.

With hq2x.

No. Cookie if you can find the real source.

Of course.

The feature would allow one to replace the default font by another 5x5 font in a set file (for now - I'm not trying to make this big, so don't expect to choose filename and store several fonts like this).
This set file could hold any modification, so you could have a font with only some characters changed compared to the default, or a total replacement.

If I make a rather simple application, anyone will be able to produce this 'set file' with anything inside (no graphical interface, but it's not as if you really need one for 5x5 fonts).

I like the font, and I also like the idea of being able to create font sets.

It looks "different", not nice or ugly, just different. It's a *bit* more hard to read than the current font.

Nice work grin. I wouldn't mind seeing that in action.

It looks pretty bad, and makes things much more difficult to read.

However, with hq2x I think it looks good.

I think it looks nice. If there was an option to toggle it then I'd certainly use it when I'd feel like a change.

Filtered GUI is horrible, both with Grinvader's font and the standard.

...

I don't get why you guys use it.

The new font looks good to me. However, when the bright green "italicized" text is placed on the black background, it is harder to read. The text looks better when these large color differences are offset by ZSNES' standard font (Nothing fancy).

More mock-ups:

HQ2x unstretched

HQ3x unstretched

HQ4x unstretched

I like it. It's something different to look at.

It's alright. Although I like the font the way it is, seeing as I spend very little time in the GUI anyways.;) Would make a nice option though.

@Gospel: remember that even if you don't like my font, you'd be able to use another, or make your own. That's the main question, actually, question #2 was here just for kicks.

Do whatever makes you happy. IMO it would be cool to switch fonts in and out.

I wouldn't use it... but the idea of an editable ("edible"? :) ) font is nice.

Just allow the users to specify a file in zsnes?.cfg. :wink: The file could look like this:

Code: Select all

[65]
0=..##.
1=.#..#
2=.####
3=#...#
4=#...#

[66]
0=.###.
1=.#..#
2=.###.
3=#...#
4=####.
Just one example...

That was my intention.
The file could look like this:

I'd rather use another way, similar but easier to work with. I'm still thinking about the best way to do it.
