I downloaded this program yesterday and was quite amazed. It plays pretty much everything that you can throw at it and has support for the PSF and SPC sound formats built in.
What I found to be the most useful feature of this player was the seamless transition between tracks. This is especially useful when listening to an album where many songs are linked and run into one and other. I have listened to the Frank Zappa album "Apostrophe" many, many times in the past year, in many different players, and there would always exist a gap between the songs. Foobar makes the listening experiece much more enjoyable.
The only problem that I had with it, was that there was no volume slider. However, a quick internet search brought me to a thread on hydrogenaudio.org started by our very own kode54. I would like to express my thanks to him for making this plugin.
So anyhow... for those of you who have never used foobar, try out this media player. It won't cost you a penny.

Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a non-EXE download.

I've tried foobar at various different times... and never really liked it.
It certainly is a powerful program, with apparently infinite possibilities with the scripting/plugin engine or whatever they use. However, I'm already very comfortable with Winamp, and it does everything I need it to, so it's not worth it to me to figure out how to use/configure foobar.
I haven't yet used a video/audio/media player that I've been totally satisfied with. I dislike media players (or any program, like Mirand-IM) that extensively depend on plugins, because often those plugins are very complicated, poorly documented, and/or have inconsistent user interfaces. This includes foobar, and to some extent Winamp.
VLC comes close to what I'm looking for, however I still haven't taken the time to figure out how to configure and use it properly.
EDIT: I might have to finally take the plunge and get MPlayer setup.
Anyway, Winamp/WMP/MPC combination works pretty well for me.

This has been discussed before.snkcube wrote:Any reason not to upgrade to Winamp 5?Starman Ghost wrote:I'm still with my good old reliable Winamp v2.91.
If you're pleased with one version, why update? Everyone has their reasons. Sometimes I stick with older versions of big software when I'm on dial-up and don't want to download the update.
I still use Winamp 5, though.

Foobar is much better than Winamp:
- stable (one of most important reasons why i changed from winamp to foobar)
- no bloat (useless skins or whatever)
- highly costumizable
- replaygain (add and play)
- good 24/32 bit sound support
- discwriter (to convert to any other format with tags)
Pros that Foobars supports for a long time, but which are now also available for Winamp:
- ASIO and Kernel streaming output
- Gapless mp3 support (by reading the lame tag) and 24 bit decoding (shibatch mpg123)

For once, I agree with Aerdan.
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

You can customise WinAMP 5.xx to look exactly like WinAMP 2.xx and remove most of the unneeded features like visualisations and skins, plus you get bug fixes and for those that care - sound quality improvements.
WinAMP 5 Lite is 1.1MB.
I wouldn't dream of using WinAMP 2.xx simply due to numerous possible security holes:
Winamp 5.094
* Fixed: Security vulnernability in id3v2 tags
Winamp 5.08:
* Critical Security bug fixed in in_mp4.dll and enc_mp4.dll and libmp4v2.dll
* Critical Security buffer overflow fixed in in_cdda.dll
Winamp 5.07:
* Critical Security bug fixed in in_cdda.dll and .m3u handler
Winamp 5.06:
* Security bug fixes
Winamp 5.05:
* Security bug fix

I agree with everything Jpicy and Agozer said.
<3 Winamp 5
I use XMMS on Linux as it comes closest to Winamp, but I miss the video playback support.
I love amarok, but I wish it supported XMMS plugins. if it did, I'd only ever use that.
