Sound quality improvements also have no benefit for people with hearing impairments.

For the curious, audacious is an audio player loosely based on XMMS which aims to be able to play nearly any audio format you could name.

Current supported formats include, but aren't limited to:
SPC
PSF
GYM
VGM
GBS
MPC [Musepack]
OGG [Ogg Vorbis]
FLAC
MP3 [naturally; better decoder than that which xmms uses. No, not all decoders are created equal.]

Current features include, but aren't limited to:
GUIless operation
Multiple means of writing scripts/plugins for, e.g., IRC clients [SongChange plugin, and more recently an internet-based control plugin]
Up to 128 equalizer bands [not enabled in Winamp 2.x skins, though it will have a new skin format at some point that allows you to specify how many bands you want.]
GTK2-based
UTF-8 used
Ability to use XMMS plugins, provided you link against audacious and not xmms at compiletime.

I was only referring to the security bugs you quoted.
When I use Winamp, I always get the very latest version, using the classic interface. Along with a crack.

why use a crack when you can just enter a simple keycode?

M4A == AAC+ == MPEG-4 Audio.

i know this, but i didn't see any of those listed under supported formats. and i assumed that if you would list something as basic as mp3, the fact that m4a is not listed means that it's not supported.

It is supported, though; I just didn't think to include it in the list beacuse I don't have any AAC files. ;P

Actually it's more like:

AAC = LC-AAC = MPEG-4 Audio
AAC+ = HE-AAC = MPEG-4 Audio + SBR

LC = Low complexity (high bitrate)
HE = High Efficency (low bitrate)
SBR = Spectral Band Replication ( = same technology that mp3ro uses)

M4A and MP4 are just containers. I think M4A can only contain AAC while MP4 can contain a lot other formats including video.

I used to be what you might consider a spokesperson for the keep Winamp 2.9x and be anti Winamp 5 crowd, but I eventually bit the bullet and upgraded to Winamp 5 because it handled an additional sound format or two that I wanted.

Anyway, it's really not bad, in fact, it's just the opposite. It's GOOD. These points have already been mentioned, but I'm going to say them again.

1.) You can make it look just like 2.9x.

2.) You can get Winamp 5 Lite and the filesize is very small and un bloated. Comparable to 2.9x.

3.) Installation allows you to not install any of the 'bloat' features.

4.) It's more stable (for me anyway), and more secure.

If nothing more it's worth the upgrade for the bug and security fixes. There's really nothing negative about Winamp 5.

@Aerdan:

How do you navigate NSFs in Audacious? I can only get one song to play.

I've checked the manpage and (almost) searched their forums. (The seacrh for that board is lame. Forces a minimum of five characters per search term)

[edit: speeling :? )

Winamp 5.2 is tentatively released: http://forums.winamp.com/showthread.php ... did=238648.

It's not on the front page of Winamp.com yet, though.

EDIT: On the front page now.

The NSF support is kind of limited right now, since the player itself doesn't support 'ghosting' other tracks in a multi-track file yet. Feel free to fix that and offer a patch, though.

foobar2000 v0.9 Release Candidate (2006-02-24)

So, I downloaded this and started playing around with it. My god, it is incredibly better than 0.83.

First off, the Preferences page doesn't scare me. From what I remember of 0.83's preferences, there was a lot, they were complicated, etc. Although now, it seems like there are too few preferences.

And damn, there's a lot to be said for having a standard Windows interface. Winamp certainly falls short in this arena. The classic skins are too small by default at 1280x1024 resolution, and double-sized is too big. The modern skins are compartively less responsive (slower) than the classic skins, though this seems to less so the case with the release of Winamp 5.2.

Also, I'd like to call attention to the following changelog item:
- Dropped Windows 95/98/ME/NT4 OS support. Windows 2000, XP or newer is now required.

Dropping legacy support like this generally seems to improve the performance of programs. It makes me happy.

Foobar might become my primary audio player. I'll still keep Winamp for occasional use, like when I want its visualizations, and when I want some Shoutcast.

Foobar2000 0.9 is officially released. http://www.foobar2000.org/

I'm not using it because it doesn't have an ASIO or Volume component yet. I've heard they've not even started working on an ASIO component because there is no API for output components >.<.

Click the volume display in the Default User Interface. There's your volume control.

yes, that volume control sucks. I need one that is visable in the interface and that alters the master volume of my soundcard.
