Screw pronunciation

Post by whicker »

If people from other countries can come to the US and mangle our words left and right, why is it okay that a (supposed) Greek chef can get all pissy with me for mispronouncing Gyro?

It's not like I said gyro as in gyrocopter or gyroscope. I said Jeero, which is close enough to "zheer-oh" or "yeero" or whatever the hell it is. Next time I'm ordering the pita sandwich.

You're missing the point of the pronunciation. The G at the beginning is silent.

When I was in college, the (supposed) Italian person taking my order in the cafeteria always gave me a smirk when I ordered the Mostacholli bake. Mosta-chelli. Moss ta schelli. Just slap that messy shelly slop on my plate, please. Screw pronunciation, it's close enough. At least spaghetti and ravioli sounds pretty close to how it is spelled. No side of "smirks" with those.

There's being slightly off, and there is being way off. Sometimes it helps asking the people how to pronounce it so that you don't offend them.. that's what most non-native not fluent speakers of English do.

....Lighten up on him, idiot. He was pointing out the first four letters. He never fucking said that they were related besides that, now did he?

As for gyro, I always pronounced it like phonymike described, same with the scope.

I'm Greek-American and when I'm in America, I'll pronounce it jyro and when I'm in Greece I'll pronounce it yeero. Fuck anyone who tells me different.

I think that english is harder to pronounce than spanish. Spanish just has one sound for each vowel, for example. The H is silent though, unless it's next to a C, then it sounds like "CHeap".

Not entirely true, they are derived from the same kind of thinking.

Gyro- is to go around, so to speak. Whether it's a rotating hunk of meat over a heat source, a highly balanced spinning wheel, or an airplane hybrid with whirring blades overhead, the actual thought is the same.

...I just wish I could roll R's and pronounce burrito right.

I heard that Taco Bell was the only restaurant to survive the franchise wars, and so now all restaurants are Taco Bell.

Am I? Whatever.
I don't know if I feel "specially loved" or "really freakin' scared" since you bothered to read my previous posts.

And to be honest, I thought you actually were talking about the gyroscope. Seems I had a (or keep having) bit of a problem understanding the post contents. Oh well. Too bad phpbb2 doesn't have an ignore feature (AFAIK), so those who seem distraught by my posts could simply push the little button and worry not about me.
