They are two completely different things

wine is primarily only good for 2d vb applications. it does not do d3d emulation.

cedega is specifically geared for directX applications, primarily 3d games

wine is free

cedega is not

For gaming?... Cedega. I don't know if it handles normal applications that rely on the Windows GUI will work with Cedega, though.

For normal applications that aren't super huge and complicated, I would go with Wine...

For example of Wine's power, it can run Firefox :).

Try running it from the command-line (wine), and post the output :).

I figured out how to get it running now , I couldn't get much to work cuz I was in root

Had everything up and running , with WineX , and with WineX I installed few things like YahELite and IE6 (IE6 was a suggested add-on to elite)

my dumb move was forcing GNU C libraries to install , now I gotta reinstall linux

I'm gonna try Suse 10.1 , since my time in Linux was in Suse about 4-5 years ago , and I had good luck with it

Anyway if anybody is interested , this is the drivers I was talking about - http://atrey.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~vojtech/joystick/

the problem I had was unrecognized file types when I tried to make

Just don't use wine for games, it's crap that way.

Btw, trying to start off using linux on Slackware is really dumb. It's also not necessary and the optimizations are now hype same as with Genpoo.

just tryin it out and learnin stuff

I suck with linux commands , like I run "jstest" which tests the input , but I dunno how to format it to run for example the "normal" mode

Code: Select all

Usage: jstest [<mode>] <device>

Modes:
--normal One-line mode showing immediate status
--old Same as --normal, using 0.x interface
--event Prints events as they come in
--nonblock Same as --event, in nonblocking mode
--select Same as --event, using select() call

What's wrong with Slackware? Better than starting on dead-rat or mandrake, u-crap-to(Ubuntu) or some other shit distro like Suse. Debian is another good starter, but a different than linux (I'm pretty sure anyways, been a while).

suse has KDE. that qualifies it as a good starter. and it's a got a pretty good updater. with a decent sized repository of programs.

Que: From my experiences, slack was dodgy as all hell. Hell usually it would even ask me for a root floppy, even on startup. I installed it on my laptop, and it has no floppy drive :?

I tend to personally like Ubuntu (and related), Gentoo, and DSL.
<Nach> so why don't the two of you get your own room and leave us alone with this stupidity of yours?

Well I just loaded up an RPM for the joystick drivers , then tried to configure what it didn't install

I tried making a rc.local but it wouldnt load it , then I edited rc , broke my linux , but it'd still boot up and run KDE , I think I'm better off buyin a chip burner and converting my multitap to usb...

But I'm gonna reinstall , and perhaps one day I'll figure it out , or find somebody else that figured it out

You don't know what you're doing. I've never run into any problems like this.

Slackware handles thing differently. Ask on the forums, and check the knowledge base for info.

It's not Slackware, sure it works, but imo Ubuntu does not work well. Whereas I believe Slackware does.

Slackware takes a long time to set up and requires more knowhow whereas something like Ubuntu is installed more ready in one hit. These are both fine. But that's why I wouldn't recommend Slackware for a newbie. If someone wants to learn linux right at the start by using Slackware or LFS then for their sake they better be reading off a good manual. But if you just want to use it as a desktop already and learn things as you go along, first go with an easy one like Ubuntu.

This was on a Suse 10.1 install

I'm just considering goin to suse 9.3 , it's stable and I've run it before a wee bit , but I'm gonna build an adapter for snes based on the Linux schematics , and see if my friend who has suse 9.3 on most of his machines , can figure out how to get it working

I certainly have had no luck , and newer kernals are supposed to have the kernal support , so it says no need to patch the kernal, and it also claims a 2.0 of the drivers (I certainly found nothing up to 2.0) but I tried an RPM for suse 9.3 under suse 10.1 , maybe it just wouldnt work right , I dunno , I just know I cant get it to work

Typical, helpful response from a Linux geek.
