Discussion about the future of the Docs

Post by xamenus »

I'll get straight to the point.

I've been doing a little thinking about the eventual move of the Documentation Project from SourceForge to BountySource. While I like the idea of better unity between the two projects (as in, both being hosted in the same trunk/server), I see a small potential problem.

The problem is, if the ZDP is hosted in the same SVN trunk as ZSNES, wouldn't the commit messages between the two projects both appear together on the CIA page? Or will we just host the ZDP in a separate trunk as it is currently?

Another thing I've been thinking about is the ZSNES website, ZSNES.com. As we're all aware, some of it is quite out of date. As a solution, I'm thinking we could:

1. Give the Doc Team access to the ZSNES project on SourceForge. From there, we will be able to update the ZSNES website (zsnes.sf.net). Of course I'm aware that we will probably have to make negotiations with _Demo_.
2. Start hosting the ZDP there. Or instead if we want to move it to BountySource, that's fine too.

With that done, we will delete the zsnes-docs project from SourceForge.

So, the main goal here is to get ZSNES.com updated. I probably wouldn't have time to work on the site much now, but some of us may at least be able to get some of the older content updated. And I have no interest in completely overhauling the site and giving it a new theme.

So, does anyone have any opinions/comments/criticisms about this?

Only _Demo_ has access to the main website. There is no site on zsnes.sf.com
May 9 2007 - NSRT 3.4, now with lots of hashing and even more accurate information! Go download it.

Which is why I said that we would have to make negotiations with him. I would imagine that zsnes.sf.net does exist, except it just redirects to www.zsnes.com.

In relation to all this, why isn't Bountysource used to host file releases?

Overall, it seems silly and is more work to maintain a project on multiple hosts.

Is it ever going to be a good idea for the Docs and ZSNES to be in the same repository? The people who work on each project are different. What's the likelihood that BS will ever implement the permissions thing for its SVN?

IIRC, brief discussion was that BS couldn't handle such load at the time.

Pretty much.

In the end, I think the docs do need to be hosted along with ZSNES development, but neither should interfere with each other though (like, doc devs edit stuff in the main ZSNES branch). I dunno what is the status with BS though on the request... I probably will check it out.

BS at this time can't handle this kind of battery and assault:

Excuse my ignorance, but what's the official reason for the move to BountySource anyway? My understanding is that SourceForge was down too often. Does BountySource offer any special enhancements over SourceForge?

That's all important, when you think about it. Stopping development because SF is down is not productive.

Not that I think about it. At the very least, progress hasn't been stopped because of server stoppage.

I agree. Which leads me back to my proposal in the original post: If we're going to have ZSNES hosted on two servers regardless, we might as well take advantage of the SF one and use it to update the site. Just my two cents.

What sounds a little more reasonable.. is do what is currently done.. like do development on a separate server and sync on release dates. (Obviously no development is done in SF, but it's to host the thing.) Seems more appropriate to me.

OK, that makes sense. So I guess we'd need to get a complete copy of the ZSNES website into the zsnes-docs SVN. I don't know how to do that, but it seems like a good idea.

So, what's going on?

Is the plan to develop the zsnes.com main site in the zsnes-docs project, and then upload those changes occasionally?

I don't really see why we should use the old pages, but rather start anew.

I notice there are some google ads on the main page. Where does the money from those go? Will they be necessary in the future?

It sounds good to me, though it's definitely a team decision that should be made. It's important that we get _Demo_'s approval, of course.

I'm not sure if I was clear... we don't touch the main site... we use SF for hosting the docs, but develop them elsewhere (BS).

It goes to Demo to pay for the server I suspect. I don't think it's an issue really. Might as well put some around... a few, but not-intrusive ads can't hurt. Note: You cannot use ads on pages hosted on SF anyways.

Haven't any of you(devs) spoken to Demo about allowing somebody to update the web page? This has been a ridiculous and unnecessary thorn in ZSNES for far too long. I'd just as soon go buy a new zsnes related domain and put up your own site if I were you, if he can't be reasoned with.
