DirectX 10 on WinXP and Vista Aero Glass with < DX9 cards

*Shocking news*

DirectX 10 Compatibility Libraries Preview
(a preview release is now available for download)

These libraries allow the use of DirectX 10 games on platforms other than Microsoft Vista, and increase hardware compatibility even on Vista, by compiling Geometry Shaders down to native machine code for execution where hardware isn't capable of running it. No longer will you have to upgrade your OS and video card(s) to play the latest games.

The current preview allows you to run a number of examples from the DirectX SDK on Windows XP. They're not the greatest thing since sliced bread, but we want to whet your appetite. We hope to release builds in the coming months progressing from demos to fully functional games.

This project looks very promising.

Ach, these are the guys who want to reimplement Wine from scratch to be "gaming-optimized". I remember, when they first announced the project, they were quite adamant about not using any Wine code, period.

Interestingly, they seem to have some sort of product now - "When you signup now, you will immediately receive access to the first ever alpha release of Alky which will convert the Prey Demo to run natively on OSX and/or Linux!" I guess they ditched the open-source model they started with. Hmm.

As I read this, it is supposedly a DX10->OpenGL wrapper. If a feature is not supported in OpenGL, it will be CPU/software driven.

It is not worth paying attention to this until it has decent compatibility. There has been comments that Halo 2 uses like nothing from DX10... so take it for what it is worth.

I understand that. With their vision, they have to have an insane amount of time and dedication to accomplish anything. I'm just amazed they've gotten anywhere.
