I loved the thread on RHDN, so I'm posting it here.
It also has an Office Space pic and a reference to Dilbert.

The real mastery comes from being able to tell someone he/she is totally wrong without being rude at all (that is, the other person actually accepting it). He who understands deserved correction, he who doesn't, well, dhu.

I'm immune to the consensus effect since I'm a total ego-inflated bastard when it comes to stuff I know.
However I fix this by never having to estimate my skills. Woo !
Being rude while pointing out other people's stupid is in my job description, btw.

That's what degrees are for. At the very least, you ask for experience. True some mayget those through faking/money/sex favors, but it's a bit more sure than just hiring someone just cause he says he can.odditude wrote:Unfortunately, that doesn't help when you're trying to hire someone or plan a project and need to know who can do what well.corronchilejano wrote:I no longer tend to talk about what I can or can't do. It also works the other way, when you have to put up with a hiring manager who can't tell good from crap.corronchilejano wrote:That's what degrees are for. At the very least, you ask for experience. Working with lawyers with 20 to 30 years in the business makes a 4th year law school student feel like an idiot, even if you are able to ace your classes.
But it's for the best, it's better shut up and learn, to brag about being the shit and make a mistake, because no one cares that you ace, but when you blow it, EVERYONE is looking at you.

They say in spanish, "Mas rapido cae un mentiroso que un cojo", somewhat like Faster falls a liar than a cripple. It doesn't really make much sense to brag once you're in the real world. You end up looking like a dick.

I talk about shit I don't know but I know that I don't know

"I am not young enough to know everything." - Oscar Wilde (1854-1900)
what gets to me is not so much someone's ignorance, everyone is ignorant about some things, you can't know everything, but hopefully you are aware of your ignorance, and willing to try to learn
it is the people who are too self important and think they know it all. EVERYONE can always learn more.
and also the people who revel in ignorance, they like it, and like chaos, that is irritating
another thing that has been said, people who strongly dislike arrogance in others often suffer from a little arrogance themselves.

On the internet, there's something like 95% of people who have an I.Q of 150 and beyond (i.e: scores in the top 99.9%) and more than 95% place well above average in terms of looks.Deathlike2 wrote:http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=406
For that to be mathematically possible, I guess you'd need to have 1% of people (i.e: the 1% who don't score above average) with IQ scores of minus20654 or something to balance things out, and with looks so horrible it disrupt one's DNA integrity just by looking at them.

Re: Article: Unskilled and Unaware of It
it may very well be likely, because IQ is (or at least what I was told) stratified by age. If you put all ages with high IQ's into the same bin, you'll get a really high number, but a number that is complete nonsense to express as an overall percentageSnark wrote:On the internet, there's something like 95% of people who have an I.Q of 150 and beyond (i.e: scores in the top 99.9%) and more than 95% place well above average in terms of looks.Deathlike2 wrote:http://www.damninteresting.com/?p=406

Alright, I probably suffer from low Ayecuetus because I don't see how this is likely.whicker wrote: it may very well be likely, because IQ is (or at least what I was told) stratified by age.
According to what I read, approximately only 1 in a 1000 have an IQ of 150 or more...Now, according to the folks on teh internets, that number rise to something like 1 in 3 people... Something doesn't add up. Either only members of the Triple Nine Society post on the internet...or there' a lot of bullshit going on with people making up large scores, or they're taking pseudo IQ tests that gives ridiculously high, non-standardized results.
edit: Ok, I get what you're saying, but results are supposed to be "averaged" aren't they? So that if you score in the average of the adult population your score is supposed to be near 100.
Re: Article: Unskilled and Unaware of It
agree. I bow out of this discussion.Snark wrote:there' a lot of bullshit going on with people making up large scores, or they're taking pseudo IQ tests that gives ridiculously high, non-standardized results.
good day, sirs.
