im guessing that's in case they wanted to add to the controller's design, much like the way they had few extra places to add wires on the psx controller, which they used to add force feedback, analog sticks, and analog buttons

and im almost certain that the other 2 are connected inside the snes, because otherwise there wouldnt be any room for extension. also, extension cords usually (if not always) have all 7 wires in case a controller makes use of some weird ones.

they're also sometimes used for other types of controllers like guns, driving wheels and the such

If you're not an engineer, I recommend these people.

You can buy controller's people have already converted to HID USB. No driver if you're using Windows or Linux. I have the RetroPad (NES) and SuperRetroPad (SNES). They work great.

I have a Super RetroPad, and it works great, but they used a 3rd party cloned controller, which feels cheapy. RetroZone sells a much better product for the SNES. It is a SNES Multi-tap to USB, and it might be a little expensive, but then again, you can connect 4 controllers to 1 USB port. It is at the bottom of this page:

kilivipin, as long as the thread hasn't been posted to in 10 days, it's good. The only exception is if someone has something helpful, stays-on-topic, and insightful to offer to the thread.

Very true. Meaningless thread bumping is evil.

Now all we gotta do is wait for a mod to lock the topic. LoL

As long as replies are on-topic with regards to the thread, then who cares when the thread was started? Why have two threads on exactly the same topic just because the first thread was started a long time ago? It keeps the message board more organized to treat threads like folders for organizing topics. Now, if anything, this thread is in the wrong forum and should be in the controller forum. So a mod should move it there.

I'm curious if this would be possible to do with a gameport instead of a parallel port?

I can't imagine it wouldn't be possible, only that the likelyhood of finding one or finding someone who would want (and has the skills to) build one would be a rarity.

Gameports don't seem to popular now-a-days, except in legacy joystick makers who add USB converters to semi-modernize them.
