I have an idea why the wii remote stopped working, I tried 8 different rechargeable batteries and lo and behold our multimeter reported them all as dead (needing charging) lol.

most of the internet last time I ran up on it played a song that said recharging batteries fry wiimotes unless they are a specific wapanese brand
