Which ZSNES do I need to extract sprites? Layer removal basically is what I need. I would appreciate the help!

Read the readme.
May 9 2007 - NSRT 3.4, now with lots of hashing and even more accurate information! Go download it.

All (most?) versions of ZSNES extract sprites from ROMs.

Not really. Only if you think that packing 1..4-bit pixels into one byte is some sort of compression.

Maybe it's still useful for him - eg. Metroid has many uncompressed graphics.

vSNES is a savestate viewer. It can view the image and peces of what was on the screen when the savestate was taken. Download it and give it a try to see for yourself. ;)
