Question about saving

Ok, well....how do I get a game to save after I close ZSNES?
What I mean is......I'll save a game under save state 1, and then I'll close zsnes (btw i'm too stupid to learn the name of the emulator), but when I open the game and go to load state 1, it doesn't do anything. Am I supposed to open ZSNES then go to load state?

After you load zsnes, load the game first, then load the state.
