that looks fucking awesome. however I ain't walking around with a $600 piece of equipment in my pocket. I wouldn't even pay $600 for the best gaming console ever created!!
funny thing they show my phone as the blackberry under "buttons and controls can't change," but my phone has a roller ball and yours doesn't so eat shit and die apple!

I like it a lot. cons: no gps, can't view videos on websites.
even though I hate apple and wish it would just die off, I do give it credit for doing everything they do. they made the gui, and billy stole it and made windows. now that microshaft came out with a competitor to the ipod (how many years later?) apple sticks it up bill's ass by showing a kickass phone everybody wants. I wonder how long it will take microshaft to come out with their version of the phone.
actually they already got phones running windows, so ms has their share on the software side. they pry won't bother with hardware, they already got something apple doesn't have... the xbox

I don't like Apple's monopoly on digital music formats and ipods, but I must say they do know how to make appealing stylish devices. They have a heck of a concept design team.

Well, it uses cingular phone service.
How good/bad is it? I've been wanting to use it.

cooler in the fact it can run ANY linux application, be it emulator, firefox, etc, all with the power of apt. Has both USB host and device mode.
Unlocked as in any GSM carrier will work with it, not just cingular, advantage for those hating cingular or traveling around the world.
I will give you more power is debatable, but only from a cpu execution speed side of things since apple wont announce any information on the phone's innards
Open source is a reason to care about it because it means anyone can develop for it. Imagine using this as a TV remote, or kitchen timer, bit torrenting over your phone , plus any problems found are quickly remedied by anyone willing to help rather than paying for a phone company to patch your phones OS for you every time.
Edit: I was informed you can patch the phone over itunes... iTunes is not cross platform, you need windows or os x to use it, it effectively means linux users cant update their phone! Locking people out of security updates is really cool in todays world!

Nobody gives a fuck about a phone that runs linux and flaunts it, because in flaunting it, they open themselves up to serious support issues - like what happens when someone wants to use KDE and the phone starts running like shit, or someone complies a kernel without the proper modules and it stops working.
Does it even have an option for changing its orintation, you simply tilt the iPhone.
the simple fact is this: no opensource project will have as useful an interface as the iPhone will, simply because no one dealing with opensource UI gives a damn beyond immitating windows and adding some bells, and this all has been precedded by the Treo - so its not exactly like the openmoto is original by itself.
Hell, linksys owns the trademark for iPhone, so I wouldn't be surprised the iPhone has been in development for more than two year, the fact that it seems that Apple and Linksys are close on a deal is the reason for the announcement now, and not earlier.

Does [Kevin] Smith masturbate with steel wool too?
- Yes, but don’t change the subject.

Their fault if they want kde, it runs matchbox out of the box, they should stick to that if they want the optimal experience. Like any other display driver in linux you can rotate your display just fine, you may have to push a button for it since it doesnt have a tilt sensor, but one could also argue what if the tilt sensor gets stuck. If you dont like the interface you cna make your own, if you look at the pics, the interface looks nothing like windows.funkyass wrote:Nobody gives a fuck about a phone that runs linux and flaunts it, because in flaunting it, they open themselves up to serious support issues - like what happens when someone wants to use KDE and the phone starts running like shit, or someone complies a kernel without the proper modules and it stops working.

You incorrectly assume that "linux guys" are the only ones who develop devices with linux.
Motorola yesterday at CES, it announced its first actual MotoFone model, the MotoRizr Z6 slider-style Linux/Java music phone, expected to ship in the first half of 2007.
Linksys has routers with linux embedded in them.
The Nokia N800 Internet Appliance looks awesome. I'm totally getting one.

Bravia LCD Tv's come with GPL licence, it doesn't mean running linux is its main selling point.
Linux currently works best when you don't even know its there, and thats true of all the successful embeded devices that use them.
Polish counts. OpenMoko looks like it was based around a stylus more like one for a PDA, the iPhone doesn't. Which would you buy?

Knowing how something works invariblly leads to its destruction - because you assume you know how to fix it.LobStar wrote:Id rather buy something I know is reliable than rely on a product that has a key feature of:

Don't be surprised if the OpenMoko goes nowhere.

Oh my God. Apple has invented the PS3 of cell phones. Things like it's 1337 factor, power (compared to other phones/PDA's/MP3 players) and marketshare will be hotly debated long after it's released. Way to go Apple.
