Antivirus Software
What do you guys recommend for antivirus software.
I've been using a norton trial but it's running out, surprisingly it didn't feel like it was slowing my down as much as mcafee and also while mcafee never caught anything, Norton has been catching things that it hasn't.
Anyways I'm not really interested in either because I hear people here talking about AntiVir. Does everyone agree on that or do people recommend other things like AGV.
I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium.
also if I get AntiVir should I also get any antispyware or other security.

Avira Anti-Vir was my first AV. Then AVG, then back to Avira because AVG has changed a lot over the years but every time I went back it was for the worse. Avira has one annoying popup at update (from what I remember) but its tolerable. Avast is doable if you're not annoyed by signing up for the free home license.
Nowadays I use Clamwin and scan like... uh.. uhm.
Never? I dunno, common sense is the antivirus, but if you don't know enough about files and what you're doing then get a guard like AntiVir
Spybot S&D is agreeable, AdAware used to be back in the day but I think its crap now
Sandboxie (shareware) run programs in a protected enviornment so that you don't get infected by certain programs and can private browse the web etc
Process Lasso can help you keep some programs from ever running if you get a bad infection you can't all remove
Vundo/Virtumonde is a bad virus/trojan you can get thats popular for a while now so if you get that get VundoFix
HiJackThis will help you post logs of whats running on your PC
DTaskManager is a good process viewer/control
sorry haha

Yes, you are correct.gllt wrote:Avira has one annoying popup at update (from what I remember) but its tolerable.
I was just told it can be avoided (assuming you have VERY little patience for ads. no, not by paying for it, not by cracking it, not even using the hosts file.)

but really, it's just one ad, and it appears upon AV update.

My protection is Ashampoo Firewall (since I have only a DSL modem now, no router) and ThreatFire, which is supposed to have good heuristics.

I'm a big fan of Avast. It's free, reasonably light-weight, and has a skinnable interface. The default skin is pretty bad, but there are plenty of others that are easy to use.
As a second line of protection, I'd suggest making sure that you keep Quicktime/Flash/etc patched up, and consider disabling scripting on suspicious sites by using NoScript on Firefox, or a similar functionality in another browser.

If you don't care about piracy, Kaspersky is hands-down the best antivirus. NOD32 is a close second, and it doesn't bog your system down as much (I have only 512 megs of RAM, so I prefer it). Also, Spy Sweeper is the best spyware removal program I have come across. It wipes the floor with Spybot and Ad-Aware combined.
For free programs, Antivir or AVG and Spybot are the best choices.

Kaspersky is fucking great, it actually makes use of the ntfs file system so it doesn't constantly scan the same files.

Kaspersky is faster then Nod32 once a full scan has been done and all the files have been tagged.kick wrote:Choose any of these three: Kaspersky, AntiVir or NOD32.
Kaspersky: Detection +++++ Heuristics +++ Speed +++
NOD32: Detection +++ Heuristics +++++ Speed ++++
AntiVir (Premium) Detection ++++ Heuristics ++++ Speed +++++
Also, Nod32 3.0 = Crap, stick with 2.5 where possible.

Every couple of months, someone asks this question. I'm stickying this damn thing. I'm stickying this topic. Any mod/admin with more time on their hands feel free to edit/override the first post directing to various anti-visus site as well as the pluses and negatives of them.
I use windows every now and then (now), common sense protects you from a lot, however I use AntiVir. Seems to have a small footprint and detects well from what I've read. The only problem with it is the heuristic false positives. I have not managed to get a virus since 1996/7 and I have been without an antivirus longer than I have been with one.
Side note, Linux viruses do exist, but seriously you have to be some kind of moron to catch one, which is rare because using even ubuntu requires a bit more than baseline intelligence.

That could happen only if you download a package from a dodgy / untrusted repository or if you use WINE* to run cracks/warez.gllt wrote:wget http://mirrors.kernel.org/pub/virii/rc/wormvirusrc2.sh

JAVA and JavaScript (especially AJAX) are much more dangerous. Bad scripts/apps are omnivores,so no OS is safe :D

That's nice. I didn't like Avira for that reason. Switched back to Avast.adventure_of_link wrote:Yes, you are correct.gllt wrote:Avira has one annoying popup at update (from what I remember) but its tolerable.

I was recording movies from my laptop to my Tivo while I slept, and when I woke up, the popup was there for 6 hours of my video. It was particularly annoying that it stole focus from my fullscreen vlc session. From then on, I made sure to disconnect from the wireless before I started.

I have been using kaspersky for a month and it sucks. I've always loved AVG, but thought I'd try something new. kaspersky pops up every fucking time you try to do anything, it's like a vista UAC wannabe. and then it has the nerve to have "always allow" greyed out, so you must click several things each time you want to run a program, even when you choose to open a file within a program it pops up noticing that the program wants to access your hard drive for reading. I also have yet to run a complete scan. out of five tries, it freezes somewhere in the middle, I mean mouse locks up, everything is hosed, I have to hold the power button and forcefully shut the bitch down. this is my own built computer, there is no reason for it to lock up like that. oh yeah, and when I try to play video games, it always blocks internet connections and therefore games will not run. I will never use kaspersky ever again. it looks like a nice antivirus if it would fucking work.
any opinions on bit defender?

don't know about bit defender, but nod32 is the other big commercial name for antivirus software.
i just upgraded my anti-vir to version 9. for the first time ever, it told me to restart my computer to finish an update. i'm hoping that it does not become the norm.
