Right now, I'm using Windows Firewall (+Avira AntiVir Free). Is this going to hold up or am I going to need a dedicated software firewall as well? It's a laptop so I'll probably be connecting to hotspots at Uni.
If so, what is the best free one for Windows XP? I tried Comodo and it was a total nuisance and eventually froze up my laptop.
Software Firewall?

I use Comodo, it's as annoying as you set it to be. Personally it doesn't bother me at all. Just make sure you configure it to your liking and it shouldn't be problem unlike your liking is blocking absolutely everything.
You can try Zone Alarm but it's quite similar to Comodo (aside from lacking 64 bit support). So if one annoys you, the other will as well.

In the good old days of WinXP 32bit,this one was the best (and still the best):

(download link for the latest good version)
until they sold the program to another company and the quality went downhill.
Now,the only good firewall for Vista/Win7 is the flaky/convoluted/annoying Comodo PF.
