Lousy sound on Linux

I recently switched to Linux, and also downloaded ZSNES. Then, I started playing Zelda 3 - but the sounds are quite bad.

Polyphony of music is inadequate (in Z3, for example, the text boxes' 'ticking' sound can barely be heard) and some sounds play very weirdly (again, in Zelda 3, the Master Sword bursts' sound is a series of annoying, squeaky beeps).

Is this characteristic to Linux, or do I have something misconfigured?
