ZSNES 1.42 is nice but...

Post by BlazeFoxKitsune »

I know I'm probably going to get flamed into oblivion for this, but
there's some problems with the way ZSNES 1.42 does SuperFX chip
emulation as opposed to how ZSNES 1.36 did SuperFX chip emulation.

In the original StarFox rom running on ZSNES 1.36; the "intro sequence"
when the fighters launch out of the hanger plays correctly - including
the "Emergency, Emergency! - Emergency, Emergency! - Incoming
Enemy Fighters. - Prepair for Launch!" and the sequence for the ships
launching from the hanger.

With the same StarFox rom running on ZSNES 1.42; the "intro sequence"
when the fighters launch out of the hanger runs at what appears to be
nearly double the original speed of the true SNES version. The announcer
only has time to say "Emergency! - Emergency! - ...." and is abruptly cut
off from the rest of his speech because the fighers have launched from
the hanger way before the voice-over has time to complete.

I have a real SNES and StarFox game pack and have compaired it to
how both versions of ZSNES run StarFox. ZSNES 1.36 runs the game
itself and intro sequences as true to the original as I have ever seen
StarFox emulated. ZSNES 1.42, however, runs StarFox way too fast
(many times faster then even the original SNES ran it) and even has
strange speed throttling issues [the speed ramps up and down erratically]

Doom won't even load up with the newer ZSNES 1.42
(ZSNES 1.36 had no trouble with this game)
I have read about the mentioned fixes for getting Doom to run
on ZSNES 1.42, but I'm sorry; I really don't think I should have to
go de-interleave my roms in order to get a once working game to work
again. Features of an emulator should not be stripped out with newer
releases; unless they are either very outdated or declaired unnecessary.

Why can't the emu accept the roms the way they are and have
worked for countless versions before?

Call me an idiot but I think that when emulating a system there should be
no overclocking. If StarFox ran at 25 fps on a real SNES then that is
the way it ought to run in the emulator. There may be some people out
there who like playing the sped up StarFox; but y'know what? That's what
the frame-rate increase button is for. I really do like some of the things
that were put into ZSNES 1.42, but as for playing SuperFX chip games I'm
just going to stick with version 1.36 and be happy.

Any information on exactly what changes have been made
(or were attempted) between ZSNES 1.36 and ZSNES 1.42
that may have caused StarFox to behave so strangely would
be greatly appreciated. (or how/if it's possible to get StarFox
to run correctly in ZSNES 1.42) - Thank You!

Think of it as a once-broken game that only worked because of a very ugly hack.

As for the rest... SuperFX emulation is pretty hard. Pagefault is working on it, but it won't be ready any time soon. Probably not in 1.43.

Interleaved ROMs are corrupt files. Get rid of 'em.

It's not intended.

#1 -
People: ZSNES. IS. A. FSCKING. BETA.
It's neither complete nor accurate. Don't expect things to remain working, don't expect anything.
It evolves by the hour as we break/fix stuff in it.

#2 -
Interleaved formats are the work of the devil. If you smash your cart to pieces, then put it back together in a weird arrangement, do you expect your SNES to run it ? Same with Zsnes.
Use NSRT to change your big load of hacks and whatnots into proper roms.
Zsnes isn't supposed to compensate for the dumpers' lack of knowledge.

#3 -
Your issue has already been taken care of in the first WIP release after v1.42. Check lastest WIP changelogs before whining.

Was it your intention? Did you make a pretty argument just to see how you would get flamed?

If you're serious, perhaps think about appreciating the emulator first before you talk about all the problems with it. If you spent any time on these boards you would see the hard work that is put into this emulator.

Better yet, if you have a problem with zSNES, you could even try to help make it better! Like, learn how to program and such. They need people to port assembly code to C.

It seems like you spent more time and energy writing your rant than you would've spent looking at the changelogs... that are included in every damn release of zSNES.

Precisely what happened. The de-interleave code was declared un-necessary.

I'm sorry, I never point out spelling errors but this post really made me cringe because you make the same error every time you write a word that has this sound. Just as an FYI:

Prepair = prepare
compaired = compared
declaired = declared

Also, in this case "hanger" should be "hangar". It's a common mistake. Don't worry about the typo on "fighTers". A typo is fine, but improper spelling just looks tairrible.

Welcome to the board hopper. Grammar police is never idle for long on this board...

What ticks me a litle is his nickname. I mean, 'BlazeFoxKitsune' ??
Kitsune means 'fox'. It's like calling yourself FrostCatCat or ThunderBirdBird.

Actually, I made dozens of posts before the old board got hacked (still hoping for a fix for the "invisible characters when entering buildings" and "jumpy screen when talking" bugs in Mushroom Kingdom in Super Mario RPG). I just haven't had anything to say since the boards were restored. Nice to be back though. (Bow)

sweener2001: Grammatically correct this one time? sure. every other time? no. does that give him a right? not really.

Not really. Would you honestly want to fully say out "Federal Bureau of Investigations", "People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (A Friendly Terrorist Organization)" and so on every time you want to mention them?

Disclaimer: PETA members are not terrorists. I think. Get back to me on that one. Greenpeace is pretty close though.
